Around the area: Victim identified in La Porte plant explosion

Victim identified in plant blast

An employee burned in a La Porte plant explosion Saturday remained hospitalized in critical condition, a spokeswoman for the plant owner, Air Liquide, said Sunday.

Another employee, whose body was found late Saturday, was confirmed as the man reported missing after the blast, according to a statement issued by the company.

"Sadly, Air Liquide can now confirm that the employee who had initially been identified as missing has been found," according to the statement. "His body was located at the scene shortly before 7:30 p.m."

Javier Ortiz, 30, was reported missing after the blast. Crews searched for about 12 hours before discovering his body.

Neighbors of the Air Liquide plant at 11450 W. Fairmont Parkway, heard a loud explosion about 7:40 a.m., and saw heavy smoke streaming from the plant.

The injured employee was taken by helicopter to the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, said La Porte Police Sgt. John Krueger.
