HPD: 4 children critically injured in DWI crash in Katy
A 22-year-old woman accused of driving drunk caused a wreck Sunday that critically injured four children in her car, police said.
Charges are pending against Lourdes Lopez, who police said ran a red light at the 20000 block of the Katy Freeway near Fry at 2:50 a.m. Sunday.
Lopez was driving northbound on Fry in a Jeep Liberty with five relatives when she allegedly ran the light, authorities said. A silver Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck travelling east on the Katy Freeway Service Road struck her vehicle, then crashed into a light signal pole.
A 9-year-old boy, one of four children in the Jeep, was ejected from the vehicle, Houston Police Department spokeswoman Jodi Silva said. All four children were taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital with life threatening injuries.
A 45-year-old male passenger and the driver were also taken to area hospitals. Police did not immediately know the relationship of those involved.
Information on the driver of the other vehicle was not available.
Police found that Lopez had been intoxicated and charges are pending. Silva did not immediately know what charges she would face.
