Commuters found themselves at a near standstill on Houston area roadways after crashes during rush hour Wednesday morning.

One
person died in a wreck that sparked a car fire about 6:15 a.m. on the
southbound Gulf Freeway near Dixie Farm Road, according to Houston
TranStar.

Officials said a dump truck and car collided. All
southbound lanes were temporarily blocked while crews cleared the scene
and police investigated the crash. Inbound traffic was slowed as
motorists passed the crash site.

About 15 minutes earlier,
portions of the east Sam Houston Parkway near Texas 225 were also shut
down after a crash. That three-vehicle wreck happened about 6 a.m. on
northbound Beltway 8 near the La Porte Freeway. The lanes were later
reopened.

No information was available about possible injuries or what caused the crash.
