2 Alvin brothers die in freak collision
The Barajas family was only about a quarter mile from home in Alvin late Friday when their pickup ran out of gas.
David Barajas and his two sons got out to push the vehicle, while his wife and two other children remained inside the truck, authorities said.
Authorities can't explain exactly what happened next, but a Chevy Malibu whose occupant had a bullet wound to the head crashed into the family's truck around 11:30 p.m. on County Road 144 near County Road 712C, fatally injuring 12-year-old David Barajas II, and 11-year-old Caleb Barajas.
Young David died at the scene, while Caleb was taken by Life Flight to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he died. Their father sustained nonlife threatening injuries.
The man found in the front passenger seat of the Chevy Malibu, 20-year-old Jose Banda, also died at Memorial Hermann, officials said.
"It's extremely tragic for everyone involved," said Brazoria County Sheriff's Office criminal investigator Dominick Sanders.
Many questions remain in the incident, including whether Banda was the driver or if someone else had been in the vehicle prior to the crash.
